A DORSET JIG (Violin Solo, 2026)
In the Guidelines for Submissions, The Dorset Fiddlers wrote, “Perhaps your tune is named after a friend or historical figure from Dorset or one of your favourite places/landmarks that makes the county special to you?” I know no one there, and the inspiration does not come from historical Dorset residents. Rather, the inspiration is from our time: the inspiration is The Dorset Fiddlers! Hence the title. Had I not found their listing on the Musical Chairs website (https://www.musicalchairs.info/composer/competitions), this tune would not exist. (I know that is probably the case with most entries, but still…) I spent a good deal of cheerful time researching and listening via the Internet to reels, jigs, hornpipes, and waltzes that are native to Dorset. I also listened to last year’s winners via their website. Having a reason to compose an ebullient tune is a most is always welcome happenstance.
