I Am (SSAA)
Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star-shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die. ---Mary Elizabeth Frye The poem above is sometimes

MY RED BOOTS for SATB Chorus unaccompanied (2024) is now available in-print from ECS Publishing Group
MY RED BOOTS is based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018). Both she and my late father, Josef Hoffman, were Jewish Holocaust Survivors. My mother’s brief memoirs are housed at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. I had been trying to hear music for MY RED BOOTS for decades. It is fitting that my muse cooperated with me when I was seeking a text to set to music for th

MUSIC FOR FAILS for bassoon and pizzicato strings
I created this 54 second piece in a short span of time after watching a bunch of "fail" videos online. I made certain that the bumbling melody and accompaniment are always bumping into each other. This is to reflect the world in which we live where people post videos of themselves falling down stairs, for example. The sound file which is available here https://static.wixstatic.com/mp3/f3e5c9_2d5e005de82147c19b1fcdc252e77f95.mp3 may be freely used for non-monetized “fail video

Fanfare for Clarinet Choir (Fanfare for Flute Choir 2022, arranged for clarinet choir 2026)

MINUTE WALTZ for Flute and Guitar (2024)
Years ago, I recall hearing from a composition teacher about one’s music needing “fresh notes.” This is also true for brief works in which the time one can present them is compressed. In MINUTE WALTZ traditional harmonic relationships contrast with very distant ones resulting in the musical language “free tonality.” © Copyright 2024 by Stanley M. I'M IN THE MOOD FOR HUNGARIAN for Flute Solo (2024)
I'M IN THE MOOD FOR HUNGARIAN for Flute Solo (2024). I'M IN THE MOOD FOR HUNGARIAN was composed for a call for scores by Lisa Bost-Sanberg/Fifteen Minutes of Fame (Vox Novus). The title is a play on the fact that this piece is composed entirely in the C Hungarian Minor Mode (C, D, E-flat, F-sharp, G, A-flat, B). The music features contrasting non-linear and linear melodic elements throughout. I chose a march-like tempo and mood to continue the play on words of the title, as i

Judith (Let There Be Light) for Horn in F with Incidental Vocals (2025)
I was drawn to the last name of the performer, “Orr;” my mind went to homophones. “Ohr” means “Light” in Hebrew. The Jewish heroine, Judith, is associated with Chanukah because of the miracle of the Temple’s rededication celebrated by lighting the nine-branched Chanukiah. The words are from Genesis 1:3. HEBRAIC LAMENT for Violoncello Solo (2024)
Since violoncellist Eunice Koh states that she is interested in performing world music, especially music reflecting the ethnic background of composers whose music she performs, I decided to compose a HEBRAIC LAMENT for her. No unusual performance practices are required though they were encouraged. Rather, the piece just sings, much as a cantorial soloist would sing during a sacred service. THE SAXOPHONIST for Tenor Saxophone Solo (2024)
“The Saxophonist” is a tone portrait of a busy performer. It’s marked “Mercurial” referring to the swift Roman “messenger of the gods.” I led a different sort of life, so I don’t know how performers like Drew Hosler maintain their teaching and performing duties while managing to have a personal life. © Copyright 2024 by Stanley M. DINNER FAVORS for SATB Chorus and Piano (2026)
DINNER FAVORS was composed for a call for scores by a non-auditioned community chorus called the Questors Choir which is based in West London, England, Paul Ayres, Conductor. This brief composition is a setting of the Public Domain poem DINNER FAVORS by Arthur Macy (1842–1904). The music features a "perpetual mobile" in the piano accompaniment, and easy homophonic writing in the choral parts. The melody, which is mostly in the soprano line, grows organically from the harmonie

A LITTLE MORNING MUSIC for Piccolo and Piano (2026)
