Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 21:
"A Snippet from the Inexorable March of Time"
for Saxophone Quartet
(2017)
The idea for this piece were inspired by the submission guidelines for a call for scores from the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay-based miniaturist music ensemble called “a very small consortium.” Submissions needed to consist of 100, or fewer notes and be 60 seconds or less in duration, caused me to think about how time passes in a very measured way. The resultant composition is supposed to be an audio snippet of music embodying the inexorable march of time, with indications such as “As if tuning-in to music that is already going on” and “Quickly turning down the volume knob.” :-) Not cadencing is what makes this march inexorable. While this work was not chosen for performance by the group, I still like the piece, and am fond of its title.
