Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 6:

"Naomi's Lullaby"

for

Oboe, or Clarinet, or Trumpet, or Bass Trombone

(yes, I said Bass Trombone)

and Piano

 (fyi, also for Guitar Solo)

(2005)

Composed for my daughter who was born in 2004, "Naomi's Lullaby" existed only as a melody with which I sang her to sleep that year, and is one of the few Pop-influenced melodies in my catalog of works. The following year, I engraved the melody and added the accompaniments and versions cited above.

I know... why a version for bass trombone? Because "Naomi's Lullaby" was first published by Wehr's Music House. The owner of the publishing house, my colleague Jamie Wehr, is a trombone player, and he specifically requested this version. Understand, I think that the bass trombone version definitely works as a recital piece, but if you try to play it as a lullaby for a baby, I am fairly certain that the infant would lie awake crying! :-)

Eventually, the rights to "Naomi's Lullaby" were transferred back to me, and then assigned to ECS Publishing Group who subsequently published all versions of the piece.

The version for guitar solo was created later during that time for Boston guitarist and my colleague, Aaron Larget-Caplan, for his Lullaby Project.
