Choral Piece of the Day, Installment 42: "The Clock," for Two-part Treble Chorus and Piano: Words by Words by Abraham (“Abramek”) Koplowicz (born 1930, Lodz, Poland, murdered, 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau);
The title is from the Polish poem, Zegar (The Clock) by Abraham Koplowicz. Translation by Sarah Lawson and Małgorzata Koraszewska.
"The Clock" was completed June 13, 2015. It is a bitter-sweet setting of words by Abraham (“Abramek”) Koplowicz (b. 1930, Lodz, Poland, d. 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau) as translated by Sarah Lawson and Małgorzata Koraszewska. In addition to original music, this piece also includes a substantial amount of familiar musical quotations: Big Ben’s chimes combined with the traditional melody from the Jewish High Holidays, possibly the first time those two elements have ever appeared in a piece of music together. A watermarked copy of the poem is attached to this posting.
"The Clock" was included in the 2017-2018 repertoire of The City-Wide Salute to Music Chorus, which is made up of the best 4th-8th grade voices in New York City. I am honored.
