Choral Piece of the Day, Installment 7: Rain - Secular - English translation by Mark Elliott Shapiro of a Hebrew text by contemporary Israeli poet Haim Gouri) - SATB divisi - 1988, rev. 1999 - ECS Publishing Group Catalog No. 5315.
TEXT
He places his hand on her head as a hand placed against pain,
As the last hand in the world.
What remains to be said, and what remains to be heard?
What can she say to him?
What can he say to her?
She says nothing only his voices touches her,
Like a hand touching carefully and softly.
Like a hand asking whether she may be pitied,
Whether she may hear words of comfort that have not yet been heard,
Slow, long words of comfort,
Warm as a mother, wise as a father.
Rain is falling hesitantly,
Then it grows strong.
Most of it falls into the streams that flow to the sea.
And a little, falling on the leaves, becomes pearls waiting for the sun.
