Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 25:

"Demented Music"

(Pervertimento for Cello Quartet or String Quartet)

(2014)

The year of "composition", 2014, is not actually accurate. For all intents and purposes, "Demented Music" is a genre crossover transcription of a Rock song titled "My Foldout Lady" about a man alone with a pornographic magazine which, if I recall correctly, I created in the very late 1970s.

During that time, I rehearsed but never performed with a no name Rock band to which I belonged made up of two students from The Boston Conservatory including me, and two from The New England Conservatory. (Don't ask for their names; I'll never tell!) The two from NEC quit the band right before we could even be ready as an opening act, which is when I decided to permanently abandon Rock music for Classical Music as a career.

The music features an unusual mix of the Hungarian Minor scale combined alternating with Blues harmonies. The former results in the presence of shifting diminished chords, which help imbue the music with its demented mood.

The form of the piece is Intro-A-A'-B. The B section contrasts with the music that precedes it in every way that I could imagine, resulting in what I would term a purposeful "throw away" ending, painting in music the man in "My Foldout Lady" achieving "a happy ending" ;-), and then tossing aside the magazine. (Don't ask for the lyrics to the song; I'll never divulge those either!)
