SPANISH FANTASY for Flute and Violoncello (2026)
SPANISH FANTASY features two modes: the six-note Iberian Scale (first theme) and the seven-note Spanish Gypsy Scale (second theme). Each scale begins with a minor second interval followed by an augmented second, imbuing each with a Hebraic flavor. The Iberian Scale also causes certain passages to sound bluesy. Repeated passages are always altered in some way.
The piece opens by emphasizing C (I). This is followed by the first theme which is influenced by one from the IBERIA movement of Debussy’s orchestral suite IMAGES but is not a quotation of it. A transition leads to the second theme which emphasizes F. The theme is repeated more quietly with a second ending. A brief transition leads from F to G followed by a canonic development section. This section moves from G back to F in preparation for another sounding of the second theme on F.
After a brief transition the first theme returns. This leads without transition to a repetition of the second theme, this time on C. A very brief transition leads to a repetition of the opening passage metrically altered to sound calm as opposed to its two restive predecessors. The piece ends quietly with a four-bar closing passage.
