Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 28: "Movement for Mallet Quartet"
(Glockenspiel, Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone)
(2018, 4:23)
Sketches for "Movement for Mallet Quartet" date back to the 1980s when I envisioned it as a composition for a large chamber ensemble. I could never get past the music of what are now measures 9–16, however, until I reduced the performing forces to mallet quartet decades later, after which the music then flowed from my imagination.
The music of "Movement for Mallet Quartet" mostly contrasts homophonic and polyphonic passages, fugal ones to be precise. The musical language is unabashedly dodecaphonic.
