Choral Piece of the Day, Installation 9: The Writing of Autumn

Choral Piece of the Day, Installation 9: The Writing of Autumn - Secular - SATB chorus and piano - 1999 - ECS Publishing Group Catalog No. 5421 - one of my very favorite brief choral choral works in my composer's oeuvre.

TEXT

With ink of rain and showers,

With nib of piercing lightning and with palm of clouds,

Autumn writes a letter on a garden in blue and purple.

No skilled [earthly] designer could devise such plans.

Then, jealous of the sky, the earth embroiders stars in flowerbeds.

 —Solomon Ibn Gabriol, 11th Century

Translated from the Hebrew by Stanley M. Hoffman
