Instrumental Solo Composition of the Day, Installment 21:
"The Man in the Street"
for
Violoncello Solo
(1981)
"The Man in the Street" has one of the most unusual background stories of any of my compositions. I was walking around Kenmore Square in Boston with a cellist friend of mine one day when, all of a sudden, a man playing a slide flute began walking in and out of oncoming traffic on busy Commonwealth Avenue.
No one hit him. I think a few drivers were even more amused than annoyed!
This piece was composed for that cellist. In it, you can hear the sounds of the man playing the slide flute, scurrying in and out of traffic, and cars beeping at him.
