LIFT YOUR HEADS, O YOU GATES for TTBB Chorus Unaccompanied (2026)

Lift Your Heads, O You Gates is scored for TTBB chorus unaccompanied and its duration is 2:40. I composed it during 25–26 March 2026 for my good friend Hal Katzman to whom it is dedicated, and the male chamber choir at his temple of which he is a member. The text is adapted by me from King James Version of Psalm 24:7–10.

Lift your heads, O you gates; and be you lifted, you everlasting doors; and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift your heads, O you gates; even lift them up, you everlasting doors; and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of Hosts is the King of Glory. Selah.

The music is almost always either monodic or homophonic in texture, and the form is A-A’-B-A”. The piece is “Haydn-like” in that it is monothematic. Even the B section is a variation on the dominant theme.
