Orchestral Composition of the Day, Installment 2:
"Elegiac Rondo"
for String Orchestra
(2018 | ca. 7 minutes)
Begun in 2001 as an homage to both the passing of my father in July, and as a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, I finally completed "Elegiac Rondo" in 2018. Its protracted gestation period was the result of a seventeen year learning curve regarding how to pack the most pain, anguish, and glimmers of hope possible into roughly seven minutes of music.
While the musical language is chromatically saturated, Â "Elegiac Rondo" is mostly lyrical in character, albeit achingly so. During the less frequent passages where this piece is not lyrical, it ruminates on searingly painful harmonies.
"Elegiac Rondo" remains one of the most original and significant titles in my catalog of works and yet, sadly, it remains unperformed. I hope an orchestral conductor reading this posting will take seven minutes to listen to and to consider programming this title on a future concert.
