THREE MOODS for Wind Quintet (2026)

I composed Three Moods for wind quintet for a call for scores by the Outward Collective of Wilmington, Delaware who is hosting the Wallflower Winds for 2026. The piece is in three movements: 1. Introspective, 2. Extrospective, 3. Prayerful. Each movement is in a three-part form, A-B-A’, but the A section is immediately repeated in the third movement. Something that I have been playing with lately in multimovement works is to include B sections that are proportionately calculated to be of varying lengths, in this case medium-long-short. The musical language is mostly modal throughout the composition, with the second movement including some tonal elements. The melodies of the A’ sections are always altered in various ways.

The music of the first movement is mainly concerned with tension and release, with dissonances resolving to consonances in the C Lydian mode, but all the cadences are to E minor. The second movement features a march in the A and A’ sections; the B section contains more development than the other two B sections. The little-used word Extrospective is the antonym of Introspective. The third movement features hymn-like music in the A and A’ sections, hence the title Prayerful. The melody of the B section, which is purposefully truncated, acts as an interruption, bringing to my mind a clergyman briefly interrupting one’s silent prayers in a house of worship.
