Vocal Composition of the Day, Installment 8:
"Of All the Souls That Stand Create"
for
Baritone and Piano
(1984);
Text by Emily Dickinson
I composed "Of All the Souls That Stand Create" in 1984 while I was a composition student of Harold Shapero in the PhD program at Brandeis University. Focusing on arpeggiated polychords accompanying an angular melodic line, it remains one of the most unique-sounding works in my oeuvre.
"Of All the Souls That Stand Create" received its premiere performance on 21 March 1986 at Slosberg Recital Hall, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts. The performance was given by baritone James Osborne accompanied by pianist Andrew Bonner. Follow the next link to listen to this performance.
