Chamber Music Work of the Day, Installment 23:

"Brief Prelude for Violin and Piano"

(2013, Revised 2022)

Like my brief solo flute composition, "Theme, Variation, and Reprise," "Brief Prelude for Violin and Piano" is one one of those pieces that, for years, I tried to make into a extended work, but my muse would not cooperate, insisting that I keep it a miniature, so I tweaked it a couple of years ago, and re-released it.

In  "Brief Prelude for Violin and Piano" I am paying homage to three composers simultaneously. The musical language is twelve-tone tonality (Dallapiccola), the rhythms and contours are inspired by the song, "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" (Mahler), and emphasis on the perfect fifth interval from "La cathédrale agouties" (Debussy). Otherwise the harmonies and melodies are very much my own.
