Instrumental Solo Composition of the Day, Installment 18: "Phrygian Variations: Six Etude-like Variations on an Original Dirge" for Guitar Solo (2022)

Instrumental Solo Composition of the Day, Installment 18:

"Phrygian Variations: Six Etude-like Variations on an Original Dirge"

for

Guitar Solo

(2022)

I created "Phrygian Variations" after listening to a concert performed by the Boston-based guitarist to whom this work is dedicated, Aaron-Larget Caplan, who was performing another title of mine that day. During the course of the concert, I noticed so many instances in the music of other composers of open strings, harmonics, and related techniques that enhance performance without adding undo difficulty, that I decided to compose such a work for him myself.

The intent of "Phrygian Variations" is to present a simple, familiar-sounding tune—one that to me almost brings to mind shape note music—while employing six different idiomatic (guitar-centric) compositional techniques to accompany it. I did not look at nor for any musical sources when I composed this set. If you think it is audacious that I called the dirge tune I composed "original" because you can probably find one or more tunes that resembles it, then sue me! ;-)
