* (Disclaimer: In my opinion, musically speaking, My America is not an outstanding song. I chose to create these editions because the lyrics capture the selfless, patriotic spirit of certain Jewish immigrants to America in the early part of the 20th century. During the summer of 2009, I spent time at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. After hours of leafing through the collection of stand-alone songs housed there, I found no song quite so unusual as this one. "Thy wish is holy, thy command, I deem as writ by God’s own hand." The Zeitgeist is truly remarkable. It seems the writers would have unquestioningly done anything the American government told them to do and that they were trying to spread this message to others in their community. [Clearly they were part of a generation untainted by the American government's actions in later wars such as Vietnam and Iraq!] I believe that vocalists and choral conductors should seriously consider programming this song for this reason alone. If they disagree with me about the song itself, great; enjoy! A conductor of Jewish choral music once "dissed" me for my having focused on this song. I truly feel sorry for this person and believe that this conductor cannot see the forest for the trees. There is so much more to bringing [Jewish] music history to life than bringing one's own personal tastes to bear in program planning, and in so doing, shielding one's singers and audience from music to which they would not have been otherwise exposed. There is Mozart and there is Dittersdorf. Dittersdorf is no Mozart, yet his music also gets performed. Need I say more?)
